  2. Viking River Crusie - Danube - 2015

Budapest

Jenny and I spent three days in September in Budapest as a pre-excursion package before leaving on our official Viking Danube Cruise. I ended up taking about 600 photos in this beautiful city and settled on these as my favorites. This was our first experience visiting an Eastern Block Country. We learned a great deal about the atrocities of both world wars and the Soviet occupation of this area of the world. We came home really appreciating the USA and what we stand for. The House of Terror Museum was, in a grim way, perhaps the most interesting tour Jenny and I did in Budapest. This museum is located in the building where Nazi Germany and the Soviet KGB would detain, interrogate, torture or kill the people they considered dissidents. Photography inside was prohibited. You may find this topic interesting to research via google.

This railway takes you from the Chain Bridge up to the top of Buda Castle Hill. It was built in the 19th century and is a great place to view the Danube, Hungarian Parliament Building, and Pest, which is across the river from Buda.

    Chain Bridge at Dusk

This bridge was the first permanent bridge crossing the Danube in Hungary and was completed in 1849. There are two lions at each end carved in stone. The bridge was blown up by the retreating Germans in 1945 and was rebuilt and opened in 1949.

Sventendre is a riverside town about one hour from Budapest. It is known for its historic architecture, museums, galleries, and artists. One art museum we liked was the ceramic collection of Margit Kovacs.

We were able to go through an exhibit of this extraordinary classic Hungarian painter on our last day in Budapest. I had to pay an additional $15 to use my tripod in this exhibit. It was well worth the investment!

    Shoes on the Danube

This memorial is on the east bank of the Danube River and was about 200 yards from where our ship was docked in Budapest. The sculptor (Gyula Pauer) created 60 pair of period-appropriate shoes out of iron to honor the Jews who were killed by the fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest in 1944-45. The Jews were ordered to take off their shoes and then were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and thus carried away.
