Shoes on the Danube
This memorial is on the east bank of the Danube River and was about 200 yards from where our ship was docked in Budapest. The sculptor (Gyula Pauer) created 60 pair of period-appropriate shoes out of iron to honor the Jews who were killed by the fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest in 1944-45. The Jews were ordered to take off their shoes and then were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and thus carried away.
