The first afternoon of the workshop our group of 16 participants and both instructors car-pooled to scout the best vantage points for the evenings shoots. The forest fire west of the park fortunately did not have a negative effect on our night photography.

I found that the most difficult parts of night photography is focusing and calculating the correct exposure. The yellow glow in the background is from the forest fire.

The instructors taught us how to combines multiple images to give the above effect. This particular photo combines 10 images that had exposures of 6 minutes each. Using computer software you can combine the 10 images for the above effect. The center of the photo is the North Star.

Wizard Island is one of two islands in Crater Lake. The rim road around Crater Lake is 33 miles long. This particular image is a panorama which combined 14 images. A panorama was necessary in order to capture the scope of the Milky Way.

Jenny and I stopped on our way to Cascade Locks after my workshop to watch the action on the Columbia River. This is probably the premier place in the world to wind surf. It made me feel good to see people my age still participating in this sport.

Another option is using a modified parachute to pull skiers on the river. Not sure if this is easier than wind surfing or not.

Jenny and I spent one morning touring the Rogue River in a jetboat identical to the 50 passenger one above. These boats each have 3 engines generating a total of 1200 horse power.

These boats get up to 50 mph and sometimes are only in 3 inches of water. The half-way point is 18 miles down river where we disembarked for a delicious chicken barbecue.

I thought this was the most interesting part of the trip. The river narrowed and the canyon walls were several hundred feet high. There were also a lot of kayakers enjoying themselves on the river.
