Zion National Park

On November 9 and 10'th I was fortunate to attend a photo workshop in Zion National Park. The highlight of the weekend was on Sunday when our group of ten hiked the Virgin River in an area called The Narrows. This hike was rated extreme because we walked five miles in the river. The water was 45 degrees while the outside temperate at 6 a.m. was 48 degrees. We wore dry pants and special boots to keep us dry. We also had our camera gear in water tight bags in our backpacks in the event we fell into the water. Most of the hike was between shin and waist deep in the water. We did find areas of silt and rock buildup to take photos thoughout the day. The most impressive part of the hike was in The Narrows. At this point the river is about 15 feet wide and the rock walls on each side of the canyon were well in excess of 500 feet. I really enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone.

  • I took this photo outside of Springdale, Utah (this town is at the entrance to the park and was where our hotel was located). I liked the color and the old wooden livestock corral.

  • The mountain in back is called The Watchman. From this view you can get an idea about the water flow in the Virgin River.

  • This is an example of how we photographed in the narrows. We would find a dry place in the river to take off our backpacks, get our cameras and tripods out and then wade back into the river and start making exposures. One of our instructors, Scott, is in the purple hooded sweatshirt.

  • Despite using a wide angle lens I was only able to get about 200 feet of the canyon wall in this photo. This area of the hike is the beginning of wall street. When you would look up it felt similar to being on 5'th Avenue in New York City.

  • This was one of my favorite parts of the hike. However, maneuvering around, over, and between the rocks in the river reminded me of walking on submerged bowling balls.

  • This gives one the idea about the relative darkness in the canyon at mid-day. I really like the way the morning sun illuminated the canyon walls several hundred yards ahead of us.
